In this article, learn how to create anime-style characters using VRoid Studio.

You can create "anime-style textures" very easily by applying a filter (available in your painting software) to a base VRoid Studio texture. When you import the texture you created into VRoid Studio again, you will have an anime-style 3D character.
Let's take Sendagaya Shibu (sample model) in her school uniform as an example. The detailed procedure is as follows.
Creation process (costume)
1. Select the Texture tab on the left side of the Clothing Editor.
2. Change the Basic Color and Shade Color of the "Uniform Vest (Short Sleeve)" to white (#FFFFF).
3. Right-click on Default Image and Export the uniform texture.
4. Import the texture you just exported into your painting software and apply a filter.
* If you're using Photoshop, you can use the Cutout filter in the filter gallery and adjust the value to your liking.
5. Adjust the color of the clothes.
Applying a filter to the texture of the uniform may result in different colors on the front and back.
In this case, use the Paint Bucket tool in your painting software to adjust the colors. (See image)
6. Go back to VRoid Studio and right-click on the "Default Image" in step 3 to Import the texture of the uniform.
Import the following textures into VRoid Studio in the same way by applying a filter to them as in steps 2-6.
- Uniform skirt, ribbon, and loafers in Clothing Editor > Textures
- Each part's texture in Face Editor> Textures
- Skin texture in Body Editor > Textures
Creation process (hair)
1. Select the Texture tab on the left side of the Hair Editor.
2. Fill in all the textures on the right side with white (#FFFFF).
Increase the value of the "Brush Parameters" on the right side of the screen to enlarge the brush tip. (You can manually enter parameter values of 100 or more.)
▼ The hair texture has been filled halfway through (paint the entire texture until it's all white)
3. Change the Base Color, Shade Color, and Highlight in Hair (2nd from the top) as follows.
Base Color and Shade Color: a color of your choice (select the same color)
Highlight: black (#00000)
Matching the Shade Color to the Base Color neutralizes the streaks and gradations in the hair and eliminates the "3D look". Also, if you set the highlights to black, the highlights will disappear and make the avatar look more anime-like. (You can adjust the color of each item to your liking)
All done!
You can also see characters created with anime-style textures on VRoid Hub.
The original textures in VRoid Studio come with a lot of wrinkles and shadows. This is because they are designed to be easy to work with, even for those who cannot draw.

Creating textures from scratch is hard, but anyone can easily work with existing textures to create a range of different effects by editing them with painting software. By making good use of image-processing filters, you can create not only anime-style looks but many more different things!
By registering your characters to VRoid Hub you can enjoy making them look like they're alive and moving. We are looking forward to your original characters.
