In the texture editor, layers allow multiple images to be combined in a single texture.
In this article, we will explain how layers work.
Layers Basics
By using layers, you combine multiple overlapping images in a single texture.
Each of these images is called a "layer".
Splitting a texture into multiple layers makes it easier to make detailed corrections and changes.
You can work on each layer separately.
How to use the layers panel
In the texture editor, you can operate each layer in different ways.
Let's see what each of these items does.
Add a New Layer
Click (or tap, on the iPad) on the + icon to create a new layer.
By default, every new layer will be transparent, with nothing drawn on it.
Import an Image
Click (or tap, on the iPad) on the Image icon to import an image from your computer and add it as a layer.
You can use images created with your go-to drawing software, or purchased from BOOTH and other services.
Toggle Alpha Lock
Click (or tap, on the iPad) the icon to toggle Alpha Lock.
When you toggle this ON, you won't be able to draw on the layer's transparent areas.
This is particularly useful when you don't want to draw outside of the borders.
Toggle Visibility
Click (or tap, on the iPad) on the Toggle Visibility icon to show or hide the layer.
When a layer is hidden, the content of that layer won't be displayed in the texture.
You can still draw on a layer even if it's hidden.
Default Design
When you first start editing a texture, the displayed image will be the so-called "default design".
This layer works exactly like the others, so you can overwrite it or delete it. If you want to keep it as it is, you can lock or hide it.
Toggle Visibility
Together with the Toggle Visibility icon, this option also lets you show or hide a layer.
Toggle Alpha Lock
When you toggle this ON, you won't be able to draw on the layer's transparent areas.
This is particularly useful when you don't want to draw outside of the borders.
