A new setting called "Texture Display Resolution" has been introduced starting from version 1.23.0 of VRoid on Windows and macOS, and VRoid for iPad.
This setting allows you to change the display resolution of textures to either "Default" or "1/2".
The feature was added to ensure that VRoid Studio runs smoothly even on iPads with limited memory. On certain iPads, this setting is automatically adjusted to 1/2 based on the device's specifications.
Note that changing this setting only halves the apparent size of the texture within the app.
The actual size of the texture saved in the .vroid file remains unchanged.
For example, if a top's texture size in the .vroid file is 2048x2048, choosing the 1/2 setting will display it as 1024x1024 within the app.
However, when saved as a .vroid file, the texture will be expanded back to 2048x2048.
Because the texture size in the .vroid file remains consistent, there should be no issues loading models or custom items created using previous versions of VRoid Studio for Windows or macOS.
Notes:
-
You will notice visual differences if you create a model or custom items with the Texture Display Resolution set to 1/2 and then display them with the Default setting. This is because switching to Default upscales the textures.
- If you intend to edit or use your model on the Windows or macOS versions of VRoid Studio, it's best to begin creating the model on those platforms or on an iPad with the initial setting set to Default.
-
When exporting a VRM model with the Texture Display Resolution set to 1/2, the actual texture size in the exported file will also be 1/2.
- This is done to maintain visual consistency between the VRoid Studio view at 1/2 and the exported VRM model.
-
You can switch to the Default setting even on devices where the initial Texture Display Resolution is set to 1/2, but this increases the risk of the app crashing.
- Please refer to the table below for the standard settings for Texture Display Resolution on different devices.
The standard Texture Display Setting for both the Windows and macOS versions of VRoid Studio is Default, regardless of system specifications. (As of September 1st, 2023)

Feature notes:
- If you create a model with the Default Texture Display Resolution setting, switch it to 1/2, and then switch it back to Default, the model's appearance will remain consistent with how it looked initially in the Default setting.
- This is because even when you set the display to 1/2, it simply displays the regular-sized texture at half the resolution; the actual texture size remains the same as in Default.
- However, if you make edits while in the 1/2 setting, those parts will be subject to upscaling interpolation.
- Even when your Texture Display Resolution is set to 1/2, you can still import items and textures created in the existing Windows or macOS versions, such as those available on BOOTH.
- Keep in mind that the 1/2 setting only affects the on-screen display during model creation, so you can continue to use these items without any issues.
- Do note that items with many layers or multiple overlays may perform less reliably than on the Windows or macOS versions.
