In this article, we will guide you through the main differences between the beta and stable versions.

 

The core experience and the concept are the same, but the stable version comes with many new features, and some minor changes that might confuse veteran users.

 

Models are More Customizable Than Ever

The base models were updated, and new parameters for body and face were added.

On the stable version, the data for base models was updated.

These new base models have more parameters for body and face, making them even more customizable, and are proved to endure more edits than before, without bugs showing.

 

We plan on adding even more parameters in the future, so keep looking forward to new updates.

 

The .vroid files you have from the beta versions cannot be used as-is on the stable version, because they'd need updating.

For that purpose, we developed a Conversion feature, that will convert your models' data so that you can use them on the stable version too, with as few changes as necessary.

Accessories Tab

On the stable version, your models can wear accessories such as cat and rabbit ears, glasses, etc.

Each accessory is customizable in shape, color, and design, all through parameters much like the ones you're already used to. You can also set more accessories at the same time.

Overlay Feature

On this version, you'll be finally able to create your own outfits by overlaying more templates and customizing them.

On the beta versions, one model couldn't wear more than one piece of clothing from the same category, such as two hoodies or two coats, but that's not a problem anymore on the stable version.

Each template is customizable via parameters, and the texture is editable too.

More Preset Items

This software comes with a wide variety of presets for face, body, hairstyle, accessories, and clothes.

You can start editing right after download, just picking and mixing the preset items and trying to edit them to create you own original version.

The New Hairstyle Editor

The stable version's hairstyle editor comes with many new features that weren't there in the beta version.

 

・Hair are split in areas such as front, back, side, extensions, etc.

・You can now move, rotate, and adjust hair groups.

・You can now edit the material's texture dividing between main texture and highlights.

・Toggle base hair ON and OFF.

・Edit the texture for base hair.

・Delete materials.

・Set hair bumpiness to each material.

 

Up until the beta version you could only save/upload the hairstyle you created as a whole, but in the stable version you can save each single part as a Custom Item and use it on other models too.

If you prefer to save your hairstyles as a single unit, you can continue to do so in the "Overall Hair" category, so feel free to use it as you see fit.

Using VRoid Studio is Easier Than Ever

We kept collecting each comment and feedback message we got ever since the first beta release, and did all we could to present you with the best product.

Custom Items are shared between models

In the beta version, to use an outfit or some facial parts you edited on a model, you had to export its data/texture and go through a long and unpleasant process.

On this stable version, each item you edit can be saved as a Custom Item, saved locally on VRoid Studio and shared among all models you create.

No More Undesired Skin Showing with Skin Masks

On the latest version of VRoid Studio, you can set Skin Masks.

Skin masks were created so that the skin layer of your model won't show from beneath the outfit while they're doing certain poses, or during a live stream, for example. On the Skin Mask layer, you will need to paint over each part of the body you want to turn transparent so that it won't show through the clothing.

 

On the beta version, not only did you need to erase the skin you didn't want to show, but you also needed to set the texture individually for each outfit.

If you set a skin mask for an outfit, you won't need to edit the skin texture, and it'll save you time for each piece of clothing. Try it out next time you change outfits for your model!

Edit a Different Model Without Quitting VRoid Studio

On the beta version, you had to completely quit the program after you had saved a model, in order to edit a different one.

On the stable version, you can click on the three-lines icon on the top-right of the screen and go back to the model selection screen at any time.

Please keep in mind that you can only edit one model at a time.
Since you cannot edit more than one model at a time, remember to save your edits before you switch models.

 

Other Changes

"Apply color when editing" lets you see colors on the texture in real-time

The Main Color you could choose when editing textures for face and outfits on the beta version, used to simply color the selected texture.

This feature needed improvement as it was hard to select the right shade of color since it all appeared too dark once displayed on the texture.

 

To resolve this issue, we came up with what we call Color Calibration on this new stable version.

The color you set in Color Calibration will be displayed on the texture with regards to the darker areas and result in a more pleasing and easier-to-understand graphic.

Together with the main color, you can pick dark and light colors too, so you can better balance the entire texture.

The colors you set on the Color Calibration panel will be exported and overwritten onto the VRM file for the model.

 

The main and shade colors you used to set in the beta version are now listed under the Shade Color Calibration, accessible from the texture editor for each item.

When you export a model as a VRM file, the shade color will be applied by the shader run by the app you upload it onto. This is different from Color Calibration, and will not be overwritten on the texture.

Color Space Changed from Gamma to Linear, due to MToon's Updates

 

In order for you to be able to create anime-style characters and use them on many services supporting the VRM format, we updated our shader to the latest version of MToon. Due to this change, the color space has changed from Gamma to Linear.

 

For this reason, the way shade colors and rim lights show on the beta and stable version might differ.

Anime-style Face Shading

The beta version only supported realistic shading that followed the facial feature outlines. On the stable version, you'll be able to create anime-like characters, where the shades are weaker at the front and follow the face outline.

 

How to Use Models From the Beta Version

Model Data (vroid file)

 

We developed a Conversion feature, that will convert your models' data from the beta version so that you can use them on the stable version too, with as few changes as necessary. 

 

To convert any model, open the stable version of VRoid Studio, click on "Models from Beta ver.", pick a destination for the converted model data to save in, and the conversion will start automatically.

The components that the Conversion feature will change are as follows:

・Parameters for face, hairstyle, body and outfits

・Converting hairstyles and hair materials
　* Converted hair will be displayed in the Overall Hair category.

・Adjusting skin, face, and outfit textures to the new model data

* Layers will keep the same order and design even after conversion

・Adjusting Shade Color Calibration for each part such as face, hair and body

 

The converted models will appear among the recently edited models on the main screen.

 

Please understand that, while we're aiming to convert the models so that they won't be visually affected by the process, there might be some differences in the way they look after conversion.

If this happens, please consider adjusting your model to your preferences via the parameters.

 

We are sorry to ask you to go through this after all the time you spent creating your model.

Hair Presets

You will not be able to import hair presets created from the beta version.

Please consider importing a model wearing the hair you wish to import, converting it, and then editing the model so that you can save that hair as a custom item.
